Today is the official first day of Fall, also known as the Autumn Equinox Day. This is the day that the sun has crossed the equator, going from the north to the south. Each day is getting a little bit shorter until Dec 21, which is the Winter Solstice. Winter Solstice will be the shortest day of the year for us chaps in the Northern Hemisphere (vice versa for peeps in Southern Hemisphere.)
What typically happens in the Fall?
- Cooler weather
- Shorter days – more darkness
- Leaves start to change colors (eventually, they start to fall in Fall, go figure?)
- Pumpkins pop up
- Harvest time!
Getting ready for colder weather & securing food from the recent harvests were typical events in older times; then rejoicing the harvests with Octoberfest type activities and wine celebrations with crushing of the grapes.
