What is a state tint law?
State tint laws inform car owners how dark or how light car film should be on a car window. US states established tint laws to ensure protection that law enforcement can see inside car windows when approaching vehicles. In general, a 25% vlt tint law allows officers to see inside driver’s side window. However, some states require a 70% tint law for driver’s window such as in California and NY. Texas and Florida have a 25% / 28% vlt tint laws for drivers’ windows.
States then allow darker films (in general) on the back windows and back windshield as per their tint laws.
What is your state tint law? Following the auto tint laws is important to keep the car tint industry healthy and safe. And remember that State Tint Laws are updated from time to time, so always look up your local state laws. In the meantime, here is the State Law chart from IWFA that was updated around 2021.
Notes for the below chart: the # is the VLT (visible light transmission) that is netted after installation on the vehicle glass. If you state law is 25% vlt, then you should apply a 33% vlt film to be safe.
